It’s finally arrived, GRADUATION! Now, you need that real job. Kind of scary but for sure exhilarating to realize this is the start of your long awaited career. By now parents and well meaning relatives and friends have battered you with lots of questions, not the least of which is “What do you want to do?”
There is the moment - perhaps you have it all figured out - know precisely what you want and the type of company where you will find it. And, you provide a rapid fire answer. But, most young people launching their career vacillate between being a bit skeptical and unsure to being convinced their chosen role is out there. This is the time to take a deep breath and take stock of who you are, where you’ve come from and where you are at this very moment!
There’s good news for new grads as the market appears to be ripe with opportunity as there are more than 10 million job openings or 1.7 open jobs for every person looking for work. Currently, undergraduates are receiving 1.14 job offers before graduation according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). Companies appear to be quite bullish on the class of 2022 so despite the economic newsfront, there is a sense of optimism and demand.
A word of advice here - despite the optimism - students are completing more job applications increasing their opportunity to land a desirable position quickly with a company they admire. Students are trying harder just as their personal requirements have shifted. Most newly minted graduates are interested in having an impact at their job while engaged in work that is meaningful and makes the world a better place. Once again NACE states that graduating seniors want to be part of an organization that embraces Diversity, work life balance and enhances the world at large. Salary no longer gets top billing but remains an important decision point.
So much about life success/satisfaction is formulated by your perspective. Let’s itemize where you stand. You have just accomplished an amazing four year journey during which you have presented and documented your capability and knowledge to a variety of professors, colleagues and perhaps even a part-time employer or an internship. All of life’s opportunities lay ahead. Good news for you, taking the discipline you have mastered into your search will pay off handsomely - a Job Search is a Job. Make sure you have a professional resume that is relevant and speaks to the job you yearn to have. Customize your Cover Letter and be sure your personality comes through. And, finally, Don’t Quit the search too soon. One interview does not mean you got the job.
